Newest Service for Glaucoma Patients: iStent inject®
Ludwick Eye Center is excited to announce we now offer a revolutionary treatment to reduce intraocular pressure in adult patients with mild to moderate, primary open-angle glaucoma. iStent inject is a new type of micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) that recently received FDA approval. Our eye doctors in Hagerstown, Chambersburg, and Waynesboro are some of the few who are already offering this innovative treatment, and many of our patients have already benefited.
To better understand how unique iStent inject is, let’s take a closer look at how glaucoma affects your eyes, how iStent inject works, and what makes this procedure different from other glaucoma treatments.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a vision-threatening disease that damages the optic nerve. This damage is irreversible and progressive – eventually leading to vision loss. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in people age 60 and over. Without treatment, glaucoma can lead to blindness in just a few years.
Glaucoma is often connected to high eye pressure that results from fluid buildup in the eyes. For this reason, glaucoma treatments aim to reduce excess fluid and pressure in the eye. Because there is no cure for glaucoma, reducing eye pressure is the only effective treatment. This can be accomplished through various therapies, including eye drops, oral medications, laser surgery, MIGS, and incisional surgery.
How Does iStent inject Work?
iStent inject is a procedure that places 2 extremely small titanium stents in a specific part of the eyes where fluid accumulates (called the trabecular meshwork). These stents act as drainage pathways to help support the eyes’ natural outflow of fluids. Fluid drainage helps reduce eye pressure and, therefore, reduce damage to the optic nerve.
Currently, iStent inject is only available as a combined surgery for glaucoma patients who are also having cataract surgery. At our Hagerstown, Chambersburg, and Waynesboro locations, the procedure takes very little time (only a few minutes to implant) and has a low risk of complications. Many people who have iStent inject find that they can stop eye drops or other eye pressure medications after their procedure.
What Makes iStent inject Different From Other Glaucoma Treatments?
IStent inject is the smallest FDA-approved implantable medical device available. Unlike some aggressive surgical procedures, iStent inject has little risk, few side effects, and minimal downtime. And unlike drops or topical treatments for glaucoma, iStent inject is a one-time procedure that doesn’t require daily maintenance.
IStent inject also has a very strong safety profile when compared to cataract surgery alone. Studies have shown that iStent inject is more effective at decreasing intraocular pressure than cataract surgery. It is this combination of reliability, ease of use, performance, and safety that distinguishes iStent inject from many other glaucoma treatments available today.
