Ex-PRESS Mini Glaucoma Shunt
If incisional surgery is again necessary and a trabeculectomy alone is felt to be too aggressive or too risky for certain conditions, an Ex-PRESS Mini Glaucoma Shunt may be considered.
The Ex-PRESS Mini Glaucoma Shunt is a very small implantable device that is used for controlling intraocular pressure (eye pressure). The device is almost 3mm long with an external diameter of approximately 400 microns. It is a MRI compatible, stainless steel device with a hollow tube that allows the aqueous humor (fluid inside the eye) to flow out underneath a flap of the eye wall (called the sclera).
While the surgery is almost identical to the trabeculectomy, the use of the Ex-PRESS Mini Glaucoma Shunt allows for many benefits over the traditional trabeculectomy, such a lower risk of scarring, faster recovery time, and a lower rate of post-operative complications.
Most surgery is done on an outpatient basis and patients are able to go home directly following their procedure.
