XEN Gel Stent
The XEN Gel Stent is one of the latest advancements in minimally invasive glaucoma treatment for patients with open angle glaucoma where medications alone were insufficient or previous surgical treatment has failed.
The XEN Gel Stent is a minimally invasive surgical implant that works by creating a small channel in the eye that drains fluid, therefore reducing the eye pressure to a normal level and helping to preserve vision. The stent is tiny, about the length of an eyelash, and is placed under the conjunctiva (a clear membrane that covers the white of your eye). While this procedure will not restore or improve the vision already lost from glaucoma, it will reduce the pressure in your eye and help to prevent further vision loss. This is an outpatient procedure allowing patients to go home directly following their surgery.
Clinical studies have shown that at 12 months patients used, on average, less glaucoma medications than they did before XEN was implanted. This Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery offers patients the advantage of better control of their glaucoma as well as likely reducing the need for costly glaucoma medication.
