LASIK is a procedure that many of our Chambersburg, Hagerstown, and Waynesboro patients choose to eliminate the hassle, irritation, and expense of contact lenses and glasses. Not only do LASIK patients regain their personal freedom, they typically enjoy 20/20 or better vision after surgery.
At Ludwick Eye Center, we offer the most advanced LASIK procedure with all laser LASIK. All laser LASIK is bladeless, eliminating the need for the metal blade and offering you a premium level of safety and accuracy. It corrects your vision by reshaping the cornea using the precision of excimer laser technology.
How do I know if I’m a candidate for LASIK?
Our bladeless LASIK technique makes this procedure appropriate for most people, provided they meet certain age and health requirements. LASIK can be used to treat a broad range of prescriptions, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
During your consultation, Dr. Weigel administers a comprehensive evaluation of your ocular health. At this appointment, we also perform additional diagnostic procedures to measure the degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism, the thickness and shape of your cornea, your pupil size, and the unique dimensions of your entire eye.
What Can I Expect?
On the day of your LASIK procedure, you may feel anxious or nervous. These feelings are normal, and we want you to feel confident and at ease as soon as you enter our office.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothes for the procedure. When you visit us for your appointment, it’s important to have a trusted adult, whether it’s a friend or family member, accompany you. This is because you won’t be able to drive yourself home. You may need a bit of help around the house for a few hours once you do return home.
Both eyes will be numbed with a topical anesthetic eye drop. During the procedure, our LASIK surgeon, Dr. Shawn Weigel, uses a laser to make a flap in the outermost layer of your cornea. He opens the flap to access the underlying corneal tissue, reshaping it to your eye’s unique measurements with a laser. Once the reshaping process is complete, he closes the flap, where it begins to re-seal itself immediately.
Most patients have little to no discomfort during or after the procedure. The only sensation you may experience is a pressure sensation for about 15-20 seconds during the procedure. Often patients are surprised both by how comfortable the experience is, as well as how quickly it’s over. Typically, LASIK takes only 7 to 10 minutes per eye.

The Treatment Steps
For the first couple of hours, you may experience some blurriness, burning, and tearing. We recommend a 3 to 4 hour nap immediately after to aid in the healing process. We provide you with an eye shield to wear while you sleep, which protects your eyes from unintended damage. The following day most irritation will be gone and your vision will be clear.
Vision may fluctuate for 3 to 6 months after the procedure. Most major fluctuations stop after 2 weeks, while it can take additional time for minor visual aberrations (glare and halos) to subside. During your follow-up appointments, we continually evaluate your healing process and your vision.
Your Recovery Timeline
- The next day: You can safely drive.
- 1 to 3 days: You may comfortably return to work.
- 1 to 3 days: You may resume strenuous or “visually demanding” tasks.
- 2 weeks: In most patients, you can safely participate in sports and other similar activities.
- 3 weeks: You can safely get back in the pool, hot tub, or sauna.
