What is Refractive Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (ReLACS)?
My patients are always hearing about new advances in eye care from their friends and come to me wondering what their friends are having done, so I want to answer some of the questions I have been asked about most recently regarding the new advances in eye care.
You may start to hear that your friends are having laser cataract surgery at Ludwick Eye Center, and ask yourself, “Isn’t all cataract surgery done with a laser?” But, this is a common misperception. In traditional cataract surgery, incisions are made with a blade and the cataract is removed with phacoemulsification. This is a non-laser ultrasound that breaks up the cataract.
You might wonder what your friend had done then. It’s simple. Your friend had Refractive Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (ReLACS). Ludwick Eye Center is proud to offer a breakthrough in cataract surgery using laser technology. This is a bladeless, computer-controlled surgery that is planned and performed to exacting individualized specifications not attained with traditional cataract surgery. We are the first in our area to bring this advanced method to our patients!
How is it different? In non-laser cataract surgery, the surgeon makes incisions by hand and removes the cataract using traditional surgical instruments and blades. With ReLACS , the laser performs several of the most critical steps of the surgical process with an image-guided femtosecond laser. This allows for increased precision and safety along with improvement in accuracy.
While all human eyes share the same basic anatomical structure, every eye is just a bit different or unique in terms of size, depth, curvature of the cornea and other key features. That is why every eye must be carefully measured and mapped prior to surgery. While all the measurements of the patient’s eye will still be taken prior to surgery, ReLACS also uses a range of highly advanced technologies. This includes an integrated Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) providing live, real-time video imaging in high-resolution of your ocular structures. This data can be used to plan and perform a surgery to exact specifications.
The difference is clear to see! ReLACS brings all of these new features to cataract surgery creating a safer, more precise and accurate experience for you!
